Looking for hummus protein? Hummus has some protein in it, but it might not be as much as you think! This hummus recipe is jam-packed with protein at over 6 grams per serving!

Black Bean and Orange Protein Hummus

It’s so difficult to find a healthy, protein packed snack that actually tastes delicious yet is good for you. This black bean and orange hummus protein will satisfy your cravings but will also provide the lean protein and antioxidants you need for post-workout recovery. The black beans are high in protein (one can is about 36 grams of protein) and almond butter also provides quality protein for the perfect post-workout snack. Aromatic herbs and refreshing orange zest make the dip so irresistible, you will love eating it with celery, carrots or any other veggies!

Hummus Protein – The Story

According to Ironman (world triathlon corporation), “There is a 30 to 60 minute window for replacing glycogen stores right after a long workout. That’s when it’s best to eat high glycemic index carbs. Of course, it’s also helpful to eat 10 to 20 grams of protein shortly after as well.” They list black beans as one of the top five whole foods for post workout recovery on their website.

Plus, hummus is so delicious. It’s one of my absolute favorite snacks. Seriously, my husband and I get a giant tub from Costco or Sam’s and burn through it in a week or less. Even though there are worse snacks out there to choose from, regular hummus still leaves me feeling hungry and unsatisfied. That’s probably because one serving of standard Sabra hummus has only 2 grams of protein and 1 gram of fiber (but let’s be honest, who only eats 1 serving anyway? That’s just 2 tablespoons. I eat half a small container daily)!

WHAT YOU NEED

All you need to make this black bean and orange hummus protein is a food processor and a spatula, and the following ingredients (the recipe is below):

  • Black beans (1 can)
  • Cream cheese (or vegan substitute)
  • Almond butter
  • Garlic
  • Olive oil
  • Red wine vinegar
  • Sea salt
  • Cumin
  • Coriander
  • Orange zest
  • Black pepper

This hummus is creamy AND healthy, filled with healthy fats and protein. Almond butter is a super food and boosts energy while satisfying hunger, and almonds and black beans are high in protein and fiber. It’s easy to make this recipe vegan by using vegan cream cheese.
